Very concise lesson with many options and resources to support and elaborate. Requires one 40 minute class period and two 20 minute class periods for the lessons. There are many extension activities that support the lessons which are not included in the time allotment. Teacher prep time is between 45-60 minutes. PSA on the lightning storm in the Peep video is included for safety.
This lesson engages students K-2 in identifying four factors (temperature, wind, precipitation, and sunlight) that create weather. Using observations and content vocabulary students learn to identify and communicate similarities and differences of weather and how it might impact their daily activities. Students will learn to identify and describe the factors of various types of weather (sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy, warm, cold, windy) using key vocabulary. They will learn to compare the factors of different types of weather and identify similarities and differences. They will also collect and organize data on various types of weather. The topic is covered through guided outdoor exploration, discussion, animated videos, interactive slideshows, dress up, and review/reflection. The background material and teacher prep are clear and support the lesson well. The weather extension activities are useful for getting students to start thinking about how weather affects them and how to dress for the weather.
