After the Ice - Part 3: Our Story

Study of Environmental Arctic Change, Arctic Research Consortium of the United States

This video discusses how the historic way of life for Arctic Native Americans has changed. Global climate change is altering the ice cycle (yearly coverage, depth, and persistence) in the Bering Sea and weather patterns. Changes in the ice affect the way local native groups are able to hunt for food, and maintain their community.

Notes from our reviewers

The CLEAN collection is hand-picked and rigorously reviewed for scientific accuracy and classroom effectiveness. Read what our review team had to say about this resource below or learn more about how CLEAN reviews teaching materials.

  • This video is the third of a three part series. May be used alone or in a longer unit incorporating all videos. Teachers will need to augment the video with supporting information and activities for deeper learning. It would fit well as an introduction to the effects of climate change and sea ice loss in Arctic communities. Students could be called on to reflect on the experience of Arctic peoples as climate change continues and make connections to their own community's response to similar changes. The Arctic Report Card (ARC) is a powerful and important report for teachers and students. The ARC is supported by NOAA; [link https://arctic.noaa.gov/Report-Card]. This video is best suited for middle school and higher but may also be used in an upper elementary class.
